After you’ve sent in a job application, it’s a good idea to make sure that they have received it and keep your name in their mind. The main way that you can do this is through email, but you need to make sure you tread carefully as there's a fine line between reminding a potential employer about who you are and bothering them.

As a general rule, you may want to wait a week before you check in. If you don’t hear back that week, you can email again the following week. However, after emailing twice it’s likely that they are not interested in your for the position so now is the time to cut your losses. 

What should you say in your email? 

As there’s little to say in a follow up email - you just want to check in with them - you could mention additional things. One way to do this is to talk about what you’ve been up to since you applied for the position, making sure that you offer some specifics and talk about your accomplishments. Another way to let them know that you are still interested in the position is by highlighting your enthusiasm for what they have been up to. You can find this out via their social media profiles. 

Remember to be polite and assure them that you know that they are busy and you are not exactly a top priority!

In this way, your follow up email may look something like this:

Subject: Following up on [job application title] application

Dear [hiring manager’s name],

Having applied for the position of [position] via your online application system last week, and finding out this week about your [new venture into the Singaporean market / whatever the company has currently started], I’m even more excited to understand more about how my experience in [whatever your expertise is here] can help [company’s name] [bring in more South East Asian clients / whatever your skillset does]. 

I know that you are busy, but I just wanted to check what your decision timeline looked like moving forward. If there is any additional information I can provide you with to help move on to the next stage in the decision making process, please let me know.

I look forward to hearing from you.
