As it's that time of year when students are deciding what degrees they might like to invest the next three years in, there are many you might not think possible, from grape growing and wine making, to embroidery and blacksmithing. Here are some that piqued our fancy, and may pique yours too:

Taking a leaf from Mary Berry’s book, what about a degree in Baking Technology Management at London South Bank University? With courses such as ‘technology of flour confectionery, you’ll learn about baking as well as how the product gets from the factory to the shelf. In second year you’ll be able to choose courses such as ‘creative confectionery’ and ‘artisan chocolate’, much to the envy of all your friends.

Brewing & Distilling

With the craft beer movement in full swing, how about a degree in Brewing and Distilling from Heriot-Watt in Edinburgh? Alongside the brewing process you’ll learn about the commercial aspects of the industry, and need a head for biology. The School has a pilot plant brewery and distillery for teaching the practicalities of malting, fermenting, brewing and distilling, so you can be as hands-on as you like, while others are slaving away in front of their computers.

Surf Science & Technology

With a field trip to France and Spain to ‘explore the culture of surfing and the human and climatic impacts on the environment’ who could ever resist? You can focus on the ecological, physical and geographical influences; the business side of surfing culture; the physics of catching a good wave; or the sociological aspects of surfing towards its recognition as a mainstream sport.

Applied Golf Management

Offered at the University of Birmingham, their course in Applied Golf Management is taught in collaboration with the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA), and takes a multidisciplinary approach to golf, from sports science and business management, to materials science and coaching education. At the same time, there are plenty of opportunities to develop your golfing game and represent Birmingham at golf competitions.
