London Metropolitan University
Commonly known as London Met, the University has its roots in one of London's oldest education institutions, built in 1848.
Few cities in the world can match London as a place of culture or learning. There are more than 200 museums, over 800 art galleries and a third of all the UK's archives are housed in London. The city also boasts over 240 professional theatres, 800 cinema screens and 17,000 music performances taking place every year. And with over 6,000 restaurants there's something for all budgets and tastes.

University Environment
The university is split across three campuses in London:
Aldgate campus
- is home to the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design and its related buildings includingMetropolitan Works’ Digital Manufacturing Centre which houses a broad range of digital manufacturing equipment to help designers and manufactures develop ideas and bring new products to the marketplace and the Whitechapel Public Baths which now house the Women's Library. The campus is near the City of London financial district, the old East End and Spitalfields market, and as the area is know as being London's creative and cultural quarter, there's access to galleries, as well as bars, coffee shops and restaurants.
Holloway campus
- is situated on the site of the former University of North London, and is home to The Graduate Centre; The Rocket, the University's students' union which offers bars, chill-out zones, cafes, cinema and clubs; The Science Centre; and the Great Hall. (Nearest underground stations: Holloway Road and Highbury & Islington).
Moorgate Campus
- is home to the University's business students and its buildings include The Accelerator which specialises in the incubation of, and delivery of business development programs for high value, innovative, growing businesses in information and communication technology, interactive media, e-learning and design. (Nearest underground stations: Moorgate and Liverpool Street).
History
London Metropolitan University was formed in 2002 by the merger of London Guildhall University and the University of North London. In October 2006, the university opened a new Science Centre, part of a part £30m investment in its science department at the North campus close to Holloway Road in North London, the facility includes a “Super Lab” claimed to be one of Europe’s most advanced science teaching facilities with 280 workstations equipped with digital audio visual interactive equipment.
London Guildhall University was created in 1848 as Metropolitan Evening Classes to improve the moral, intellectual and spiritual condition of young men in London with subjects including Greek, Latin, Hebrew, English, History, Mathematics, Drawing and Natural Philosophy. In 1861 the classes were reconstituted and named the City of London College and over the next twenty years the college was one of the pioneers in the introduction of commercial and technical subjects. The college was awarded university status in 1992 and renamed London Guildhall University.
The University of North London was founded as the Northern Polytechnic Institute in 1896 and was granted university status in 1992.

In the latest 2014 REF 55% of London Met's research was rated as internationally excellent or world-leading. It ranked 4th in the UK for area studies.
International & Industrial Opportunities
London Met is part of the Erasmus programme with student exchange agreements with 30 partners in 14 European countries. This exchange can either be one or two semesters in length.

Facilities
Learning Facilities
There are five libraries which all cover different subjects, with the Women’s Library having the most extensive collection of women’s history, and the Trades Union Congress Library Collections being the premier centre for the study of trade unions and the work of work. The university also boasts a mock courtroom to help law students prepare, the Technology Tower with seven floors of computers, and a simulated Bloomberg trading floor.
Sporting Facilities
The university operates 2 fitness gyms with classes including pilates, boxercise, recreational tennis, aerobics, and yoga.

Within the students’ union there are a number of sports clubs and societies to choose from, such as the Enterprise Society, Dance and Drama, Philosophy, the Anime Society and the London Met Feminists.
Across the campus there are 10 cafès with free Wi-Fi.
The university hosts live music, comedy and club nights in their two bars, the Rocket Complex and the Hub.
Students can also get involved in student media including Verve Magazine, Verve Radio and Verve TV.

There are Chaplaincy offices at both North and City campuses which provides pastoral support to students.
Health & Wellbeing
The Disabilities and Dyslexia Service offer a wide range of support and advice including how to obtain the Disabled Students’ Allowance, adjustments to teaching and assessment, services for students with specific learning difficulties and assistive technology facilities.
The Counselling and Wellbeing Service provides one-to-one counselling, giving students an opportunity to talk in confidence about any personal or emotional difficulties including growth and development, personal relationships, identity, loneliness, anxiety, depression, anger, suicide, homesickness, family problems, sex and sexuality, and cultural identity.
Career Facilities
The Career Development and Employment office run a number of workshops for students including job search skills, developing confidence at interviews, developing skills in completing applications, and advice for students on planning for the world of work. They also offer 20-minute career drop ins and guidance interviews.
The Student Enterprise Programme offer a range of help, support, advice and events for those interested in going into business for themselves. London Met offers students the opportunity to discuss business ideas with a professionally qualified business adviser, as well as offering funding and office space and running regular workshops and motivating talks designed to equip students with the knowledge and inspiration to take their ideas to the next level.

Accommodation for the university is all provided by private companies. Here you can meet other students for other universities in London, as well as your own, and choose to join in their extra-curricular activities such as sports events, day trips, BBQs, and fitness classes. You have to apply to each hall separately and can choose the one most convenient for your classes.
