Summary
University Environment
The University is spread over 54 acres of parkland, with historic buildings sitting alongside modern, cutting edge facilities. It's currently a year into its £80m masterplan to modernise facilities across the University, create new student accommodation and further improve the landscape. The centrepiece of the strategy is the creation of a state-of-the-art library, which will be a visually impressive focal point.
Students at Roehampton are members of one of four colleges - Digby Stuart, Froebel, Southlands and Whitelands - depending on what they are studying. These colleges give students a sense of community and an instant identity, and the colleges serve as the focal points for the University's vibrant social scene and provide intercollegiate rivalries in sport and other traditional celebrations. Each college has its own accommodation and social spaces.
History
The University has its roots in the traditions of its four constituent colleges, all of which were founded in the 19th century as teacher training colleges to educate poor and disadvantaged children. In 1975, the four colleges joined to form the Roehampton Institute of Higher Education and since 2004 it has been known as Roehampton University.
