Summary
History
Originally founded as Leicester School of Art in 1870 the University has evolved through many incarnations, including the Leicester Colleges of Art and Technology and Leicester Polytechnic. It is named after Simon De Montfort, a crucial figure in mediaeval history who established the first parliament in 1265. Many modern DMU courses have their roots in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, when the School of Art and Leicester School of Technology began providing training for local industries. Art, pharmacy, corsetry, footwear, physical sciences and architecture were taught at the schools in the late 1800s and are still in evidence at DMU today, either as courses in their own right, or as integral components of more modern courses. Computing courses were introduced in the 1960s and DMU was awarded university status in 1992.
University Environment
DMU is a single site campus, making it easy to get between lectures and the library. Over the past few years the campus has been transformed with millions of investment going towards improved teaching rooms, eating areas and the Students’ Union, and the creation of a beautiful area of parkland at the very heart of the campus. The campus is conveniently situated only a five-minute walk from Leicester city centre. Leicester is the tenth largest city in Britain, is situated in the heart of the country and is just over an hour way from London by train.
