The University of East Anglia
The University of East Anglia, also known as UEA, was founded in 1963 and is situated on the outskirts of Norwich. UEA is internationally renowned and provides top quality academic, social and cultural facilities to over 15,000 students. UEA is ranked in the top one percent of universities in the world and is consistently in the top ten for student satisfaction, and received a Gold award in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).
The University is particularly known for its excellence in science. This is in part due to its proximity to Norwich Research Park, which is home to nearly 3,000 scientists working in several world ranked institutions. English is also one of its strengths and its Masters programme in creative writing is one of the most prestigious and competitive in the United Kingdom.
Its campus, located in 320 acres of rolling parkland, is just two miles from the centre of the cathedral city of Norwich. Norwich is a surprisingly bustling city with an excellent nightlife and a cutting-edge arts scene. It has been voted among the UK’s top 10 cities and boasts numerous restaurants, bars, shops, theatres and festivals. It is a centre of literary excellence and has a historic charm, with its cobbled streets and ancient castle.
UEA is a stone’s throw from the beautiful countryside of Norfolk, offering students the chance to escape to the fresh air whenever they need.

Summary
History
There were attempts to establish a university in Norwich as early as 1919 but it was not until 1960 that the University of East Anglia was given the go ahead. The Earlham golf course was chosen as its site and work began in 1961. The university was originally based in the present-day University Village, with space for about 1200 students. It admitted its first cohort of 87 students in 1963. The first permanent university buildings opened late 1966. In 1973 Sir Robert and Lady Lisa Sainsbury donated their vast collection of world art to the University and work began on the Sainsbury Centre, which opened its doors to the public in 1978. In 2000 UEA's state-of-the-art Sportspark opened. The INTO centre opened in 2007, offering high quality preparation for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
University Environment
The University of East Anglia is located on a campus on the outskirts of the historic city of Norwich. The campus is situated in 130 hectares of beautiful parkland and therefore has a large amount of green space. The campus combines natural beauty, historic grade two listed buildings and modern flair. It has won more than 20 architectural awards. Almost all university buildings are within walking distance from each other and almost every student need is catered for on campus. There are a number of shops and plenty of places to eat and drink.
