Coventry University
Coventry has a proud tradition as a provider of high quality education and a focus on multidisciplinary research, establishing a robust academic presence regionally, nationally and across the world. It is currently ranked 13th in the UK in the Guardian University Guide (2019) and University of the Year for Student Experience by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019, as well as the 2nd for Teaching Excellence by the Times Higher Education UK, and received a Gold award in the 2017 Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF)..

Summary
History
Coventry can trace its roots as far back as Coventry College of Design in 1843 while other institutions that eventually merged into the University include the Rugby College of Technology and Arts (1929) and Lanchester College of Technology (1960), and was originally called Lanchester Polytechnic after the Midlands automotive industry pioneer Dr Frederick Lanchester. In 1987 it was renamed Coventry Polytechnic, after a number of mistaken identities over its name, and in 1992 became Coventry University.
University Environment
Coventry is nestled in the heart of the city and occupies a compact, single-site campus. The University Square and surrounding area form a protected environment which encompasses the old Cathedral ruins, the new Cathedral, the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.

Research
In the 2014 Research Exercise Framework (REF) 61% of Coventry's research was rated as 4* or 3* (compared with 27% in the RAE 2008) and they are planning on investing millions in research over the coming years.
International & Industrial Opportunities
Coventry takes part in Erasmus so students have the opportunity to study at a partner university in Europe as part of their degree or complete a work placement, for a full-academic year. In addition, the University also has partnerships with universities in India, the Americas, China and Hong Kong.

Scholarships
The Academic Excellence Scholarship recognises high academic achievement and is available to students at two levels. The Levels are assessed based on academic achievement: Level 1 scholarship worth £1,250 for students who achieve between 128 and 143 UCAS points; and Level 2 scholarship worth £2,000 for students who achieve 144 UCAS points.
The Coventry University Phoenix Scholarship worth £750 per year is awarded to applicants who achieve 120 UCAS points or above from a combination of qualifications. It is also aimed at students living in low participation neighbourhoods in Higher Education within the UK.
The Sport Scholarship rewards students who play sport to a high level, with scholars receive a cash award, and benefitting from bespoke non-financial support in the form of a tailored programme of services such as strength and conditioning, physiotherapy and sports nutrition. Taking into account cash and support, the scholarship can be worth between £1,500 and £3,000 per year.
Bursaries
The National Express Health Bursaries are available for first year male health students undertaking one of the following degrees: Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Midwifery, Dietetics, Physiotherapy and Operating Department Practice.
The Sir William Lyons bursary of up to £1000 is for any UK engineering undergraduate studying one of the following degrees: Manufacturing Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Systems Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Computer Hardware and Software Engineering, Motorsport Engineering, Aerospace Technology, Highways and Transportation Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics and Statistics, Mathematics and Physics, Physics, Automotive and Transport Design.

Learning Facilities
The Lanchester Library is home to almost 1,200 study areas and over 300 computer workstations; with over 350,000 books, 2,000 print journals, 8,000 electronic journal titles and a range of multimedia resources. To support different styles of study, the Library is divided into silent, quiet, group and phone zones.
Coventry University has more than 4,000 student PCs on site and the campus is fully Wi-Fi enabled, with PC open access rooms and tech-enabled lecture theatres. Students have 24 hour open access facilities and study areas, and IT support is available online, over the telephone, in person via a help desk or via touch screens.
Coventry was one of the very first universities to offer its student mathematics support. Its purpose is to supplement the maths teaching in their courses and to make good any gaps in their background knowledge. The Sigma Maths and Stats team is available in a drop-in centre in the Library and is open 7 days a week in term time.
The Centre for Academic Writing (CAW) is an innovative teaching and research centre, with a mission to enable students at Coventry University to become independent writers, and to equip academic staff in all disciplines to achieve their full potential as authors and teachers of scholarly writing. CAW provides students with individualised advice and guidance on assignment writing and academic writing genres such as essays, reports, dissertations, theses, and exam papers. Student support is focused on topics ranging from how to organise an academic argument to how to improve academic style and sentence structure.
Sporting Facilities
Situated in a central location within Coventry University's campus, the Sport and Recreation Centre offers a wide range of activities for all sporting tastes. It includes the recently refurbished Fitness Suite, including a range of cardio and resistance machines, and sports halls where students can play volleyball, cricket, basketball, football and badminton. There are also over 20 fitness and relaxation classes.
Adjacent to the campus is the city’s sports centre housing a swimming pool with diving boards and other leisure facilities.
The University also has outdoor facilities at Westwood Health on the edge of the city which are a short distance from the main campus. These facilities include floodlit Astroturf and grass pitches as well as first-class provisions for cricket, rugby, hockey and football.

Coventry University Student's Union (CUSU) is located in TheHub. TheHub is the centre of a student's campus life and hosts entertainment events ranging from regular party nights and live music to quiz nights and sports events.. TheHub also boasts a cinema and performing art spaces. There are plenty of places to eat and drink in the Food Court from hot meals, to sandwiches, to coffee. There is also a Costcutter convenience store for essential shopping.
CUSU is also the headquarters to the university's 80 or so clubs and societies. The Students' Union Advice Centre is the first point of contact for advocacy support, and provides free and confidential advice and support to students on a range of issues such as finance, housing and employment.
CUSU Volunteering provides volunteering and training opportunities to students - this is a great way to get involved in community activities that will improve both employability and help change the lives of the people students get to work with.

Religion & Spirituality
The Spirituality and Faith Centre, located in TheHub, is a multi-faith environment which supports students and staff from all faiths and those with no faith. The Centre comprises of a chapel, prayer room, and quiet spaces for reflection and meditation.
There are Chaplains representing a number of different faiths and they have links with local community groups and other faith representatives.
Health & Wellbeing
Coventry University provides a one-stop-shop for student's physical, spiritual and emotional needs. The Medical Centre is situated within TheHub and students are advised to register with this practice. It has a team of independent doctors, both male and female, as well as a team of nurses to provide a daily medical support service for all students.
Counsellors and Mental Health Advisers are available to help students to cope more positively with their difficulties and to ensure that they succeed in their academic studies. A team of professionally trained counsellors who are available to work with students all year round. Students are also able to access a variety of resources through the student portal that can help with emotional wellbeing, including resource packs to guide students to useful information, self-help and education, a number of emotional wellbeing web links and an emotional wellbeing checklist which helps students identify any concerns they may have with their wellbeing.
Disability Advisors are part of the Health and Wellbeing team and offer support across a range of services including physical and sensory disabilities, dyslexia, autism and Aspergers and mental health difficulties.
Career Facilities
The Careers and Employability Service has a range of initiatives to prepare students for graduate employment. The Add+vantage Scheme offers students an extensive range of modules, that are taken each year, and which broaden students’ knowledge, skills and qualifications within a work focused environment.
The Careers and Employability team helps students with their choice of course and modules, help plan their career, gives students the opportunity to recognise and then develop important graduate employment skills, guide and encourage students to market their skills effectively, for example, when filling in application forms and CVs, explore all potential opportunities in employment, further study, work abroad and time out, and help identify employers and vacancies of interest.
The University’s employment bureau, thefutureworks, notifies students of part-time work vacancies all over Coventry and the surrounding area.
The University also runs a number of School/Faculty specific events, employer presentations, and employer fairs.

FutureLets was formed following the merge of the Coventry University Accommodation Department and thefuturelets private lettings company. The FutureLets team is the managing agent appointed to manage accommodation on behalf of Coventry University. They provide accommodation to Coventry University students in University Owned and Managed halls of residence, and in variety of partner properties with approved private providers such as Unite Students, Host Students and more.
Through FutureLets, the University offers an excellent range of comfortable, secure and reasonably priced catered or self-catered accommodation. You can choose to live in en-suite halls or those with shared facilities, and most of the accommodation is situated on or very close to the campus. Many of the accommodation options are located within an arc around the edge of campus in the city centre.

Scholarships
The International Academic Excellence Scholarship of £1500 is available in year one, for self-funding International fee-paying students applying for a full-time undergraduate course. based on academic performance. In order to qualify, students must have at least two of three A-levels at grade A or equivalent qualifications.

The Coventry University staff and student ambassadors are on hand to support you with your arrival, this includes a free airport meet and greet service at Birmingham International and London Heathrow Airports, which you need to book ahead of your arrival.
The International Office Team runs a five day residential orientation programme ‘International Welcome Week’ with a mix of information, social event opportunities for students to get to know other international students, the University and city before the UK students arrive. There are talks from departments such as the Students’ Union and Student Services, to give students an insight into University life and how to make the use out of the time spent at the University and in the UK. There are events during the day, such as campus tours and 5-a-side football, and in the evening activities such as Salsa Night, Karaoke, and the International Party.
