Overview
University of St Andrews
As the oldest university in Scotland (and third in the English-speaking world) St Andrews' reputation comes from punching above its weight in all measures, despite its comparatively small size and distance from major urban centres. It is currently ranked the third best university in the UK (2016), performing highly across all its subjects (in the 2016 Complete University Guide, 23 out of the 25 subjects offered by St Andrews ranked within the top 10 nationally), as well as having the joint highest student satisfaction amongst all multi-faculty universities.
The student body is also notably diverse with over 120 nationalities represented in more than 45% of its intake from countries outside the UK. The Unievrsity is also known for preserving its ancient traditions such as Raisin Weekend, May Dip, and the wearing of distinctive academic dress.
Tucked away between Dundee in the north and Edinburgh in the south, the ancient city of St Andrews is famous for being the home of golf. As a small city, the University is an integral part of it, and during term time students make up approximately one third of the town's population. There's plenty of boutique shops, cinemas and restaurants to contend yourself with, whilst the sea and culture of the city is never too far away. For those in need of a bit of retail therapy, Dundee is 12 mins on the train.
